West African Drumming class with
Baba Tyrone Davis
Master drummer, dancer, choreographer, fire dancer, costume
designer, and stilt walker, Baba Tyrone Davis has been
playing and facilitating African Percussion for over 40 years.
Tyrone studied the art of African drumming in Ghana and Nigeria.
He has performed throughout the United States, Trinidad, St Thomas
and the Bahamas.
Locally he has taught in Philadephia, Reading and Lancaster and has
performed with 4 different companies. In 1998, Tyrone performed at
the Mann Music Center honoring Harry Belafonte with the Marion
Anderson Award. In July of 2009 Tyrone received the Abalaye African
Dance & Drum Ensemble’s first ever Lifetime Achievement Award which
celebrated him for teaching and promoting the importance of the
African Culture.
This class will focus on exploring melodies & rhythms of Senegal,
Mali, Ghana & Nigeria.
Most of all, we will have fun!
Right now, our main instrument of play is the djembe. At some point,
we will incorporate the dun dun ba, bells,
shekere, balaphon & talking drum.
Beginning and experienced drummers are welcome!
